Senior Medicare & Medicaid Patrol (SMMP)

Seniors vs. Crime has partnered with the Pasco/Pinellas Area Agency on Aging to expand the regional Senior Medicare & Medicaid Patrol (SMMP) program statewide. The program has been a successful pilot project for the Area Agency on Aging in providing training to seniors in identifying and reporting fraud, errors and abuse in both the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

It is widely recognized that fraud, errors and abuse within the Medicare and Medicaid programs cost all taxpayers huge sums of money annually. Money being wasted or illegally obtained is then not available to provide legitimate benefits to deserving beneficiaries.

Seniors vs. Crime, as a statewide organization, will be conducting SMMP training throughout the state beginning in January, 2006.  Seniors will learn how to read medical billings that they receive; identify questionable charges/ procedures and learn who to contact about their suspicions. Our goal will be to reach as many seniors as possible with this important information to help in identifying providers who may be abusing the Medicare/ Medicaid reimbursement provisions, thereby decreasing the amount of fraud being perpetrated on the programs.

The Area Agency on Aging has established a toll free fraud hotline, 1-866-357-6677, to take calls from any Medicare or Medicaid recipient who feels that they may have been incorrectly billed for services. Trained staff will be available to address your concern or refer you to the proper help agency. Please, take the time to review your Medicare Summary Notice or any other billing for errors or charges for services not received. Call the toll free number when you notice a discrepancy.

You may schedule a presentation for your group or organization by calling the Seniors vs. Crime toll free number 1-800-203-3099; file a request online, or call or stop by any of the listed Seniors vs. Crime Offices.
